Wisconsin does something no other state on this list does: it writes the curriculum itself, and everybody takes the same one.
Twelve of the eighteen hours are identical statewide
The Real Estate Examining Board authors a fixed set of twelve one-hour mandatory courses for each biennium. Not twelve hours in prescribed subject areas, the way Arizona or Maryland assign categories. Twelve specific, named courses with specified content, taken by every licensee in Wisconsin in the same two-year window.

The content is unusually specific too. Course 4 is a walk through actual discipline issued to Wisconsin licensees. Course 3 covers amending a condition report, earnest money, and default. This is not generic real estate education with a state label on it.
Every hour ends in a test
Each approved hour is 50 minutes of instruction followed by a five-question exam. Providers can bundle hours into three- or six-hour blocks, but the exam scales with them: five questions per hour of instruction. You get a certificate for each hour you pass.
That is a different experience from states where attendance is the whole requirement, and it is worth knowing before you pick a provider on price alone.
The six electives must be about Wisconsin
Electives are not a free space. They must be specific to Wisconsin real estate and must teach Wisconsin forms, Wisconsin law, Wisconsin administrative code, or some combination. A generic national course on investment analysis does not qualify.
There are two useful exceptions. NAR designation courses may be used for elective hours, a three-hour designation course covering three elective hours. And Wisconsin REALTOR and Government Day, on DSPS approval, satisfies the Legislative Updates mandatory hour.
Note also that courses must be approved before you take them. Providers had to reapply for the 2025-2026 biennium because Wisconsin does not renew course approvals, so a course that counted last cycle is not automatically countable this one.
One deadline for the whole state
The biennium runs December 15 of one even-numbered year to December 14 of the next, and every real estate credential in Wisconsin, broker, salesperson, and business entity alike, renews on December 14 of even-numbered years.
That is the opposite of Massachusetts, where renewal falls on your birthday, or Arizona, where it tracks your own license anniversary. In Wisconsin the whole industry is working to the same date in the same December, which makes the autumn course rush real and makes November a bad month to go looking for an open seat.
The fee
