Texas asks for 18 hours of continuing education every two years, and 11 of them are already chosen for you. That leaves 7 hours of genuine electives, which is why agents who buy a generic “18-hour package” sometimes discover it doesn’t line up with what TREC actually recorded.

Eighteen hours, eleven of them assigned

Every active Texas sales agent completes 18 hours of TREC-approved CE per two-year period. The breakdown is fixed:

  • Legal Update I, 4 hours. Required every renewal, no substitutions.
  • Legal Update II, 4 hours. Also required every renewal.
  • Contract-related coursework, 3 hours. A specific category, not just any elective that happens to mention contracts.
  • Electives, 7 hours. Your choice among approved courses.

The two Legal Update courses are refreshed by TREC on a cycle, so the version you took last renewal is not the version you need this time. That’s the most common way an otherwise diligent agent comes up short.

The supervisor wrinkle

If your broker has delegated supervision to you, the 6-hour Broker Responsibility course becomes mandatory, and it counts inside the 18 hours rather than on top of them. In practice that collapses your 7 elective hours down to 1. Agents who take on a supervisory role mid-cycle and don’t recheck their CE plan are the ones who get caught by this.

The cycle

Texas renews on a two-year cycle tied to your own license date, not a statewide date, so your expiration is personal to you. TREC publishes a running record of the courses it has credited to your current period, and checking that record is more reliable than counting your own certificates, because what matters at renewal is what the provider actually reported to TREC.

The fee

A sales agent renewing on time pays $110.00. That total is three pieces: a $66.00 renewal fee, a $4.00 Texas Online fee, and a $40.00 recovery-account charge. A broker renewing on time pays $217.00.

Miss the date and it escalates on a schedule: $143.00 if you renew within 90 days of expiring, $176.00 if you renew more than 90 days late. Past six months expired, renewal is off the table and you are looking at reinstatement, which runs $170.00 for a sales agent and carries its own education requirements.

What deferring CE really costs

This is the part worth reading twice. If your renewal date arrives and your CE isn’t finished, TREC will let you renew on active status anyway by paying a $200.00 CE Deferral Fee, which buys 60 extra days to complete the coursework. Fail to finish inside those 60 days and the license drops to inactive.

The trap is filing after expiration. Do that and you owe the deferral fee and a $250.00 CE Late Reporting Fee, which TREC states plainly comes to $450.00 together. And a late renewal comes back on inactive status regardless, with no option to defer CE at all. So the $200 deferral is a tool that only works if you use it before the deadline, not after.

How this compares

Texas is cheaper and shorter than California, which runs a four-year cycle with 45 hours of CE and charges $350 for a salesperson. Per year, Texas works out to 9 CE hours and $55, against California’s roughly 11 hours and $88. The Texas structure asks for less, but it asks more often, and the Legal Update courses reset each cycle.

Use the CE calculator and the renewal cost estimator below to work your own numbers, and set a calendar reminder well ahead of the date. The deferral fee exists precisely because people misjudge how long 18 hours takes.

Add your renewal deadline to your calendar

Enter your expiration date and download a calendar file. Your own calendar will remind you at 90, 60, 30, and 7 days out. We don't ask for your email, we store nothing, and the date never leaves your device.

Works with Apple Calendar, Google Calendar, and Outlook. This is a convenience, not a compliance service. Confirm your exact deadline with the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC).

How many CE hours do you have left?

Texas requires 18 CE hours this cycle. Enter what you've completed and see what's left. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.

Hours alone aren't the whole requirement. Some must be these specific topics:

  • Legal Update I (4 of the 18 hours)
  • Legal Update II (4 of the 18 hours)
  • Contract-related coursework (3 of the 18 hours)
  • Broker Responsibility (6 hours, only if you supervise)

A convenience, not a compliance service. Confirm your exact requirement with the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC). This is not legal advice.

How Texas compares with the other states we cover for real estate agent renewal.

Continuing education hours per renewal cycle

Texas requires 18 hours, at the 18-hour median across 51 states, which range from 7 to 45.7 hrs45 hrs

Texas asks for 18 hours. That is exactly the median of 18 across the 51 states that set a flat hour count, which run from 7 to 45. Ranked lowest to highest, Texas is 27 of 51.

Renewal fee

Texas charges $110, below the $115 median across 48 states, which range from $0 to $578.$0$578

Texas charges $110. The median across the 48 states that publish a figure is $115, running from $0 to $578. Ranked cheapest to dearest, Texas is 24 of 48.

Each mark is one state. The taller line is the median, the filled dot is Texas. States that set no flat hour count, or publish no fee, are left out of that comparison rather than counted as zero.
