Rhode Island asks for one of the lightest continuing-education loads in the country, just 10 contact hours every two years. The only twist is that two of those ten are earmarked. And the bigger 2024 news isn’t the CE at all, it’s that Rhode Island finally joined the compact.
Ten hours, two of them spoken for
An active Rhode Island RN completes 10 contact hours of continuing education per two-year cycle. Within that ten, 2 hours must address substance use disorders, a standing requirement given the state’s focus on the overdose crisis. The other eight are yours to fill with any Board-approved nursing CE. Courses have to be approved by the Rhode Island Board of Registration and Nursing Education (or an equivalent national accreditor).
Ten hours over two years is genuinely modest, five a year, so the thing to remember isn’t the volume, it’s the substance-use piece: don’t complete all ten on unrelated topics and find yourself two hours short on the one required subject. You attest to the hours at renewal and keep your certificates for four years. If life gets in the way, the Board can grant a six-month hardship extension, but that’s a backstop, not a plan.
The cycle
Rhode Island renews RN licenses every two years, with licenses expiring March 1. The Board typically sends a renewal notice about 60 days out, but a missed notice doesn’t excuse a late renewal, the March 1 date is yours to track. Renew online through the Department of Health’s system.
The fee
Renewal is $135 for a registered nurse, set in the Department’s fee regulation at 216-RICR-10-05-2 rather than left to the portal. That’s mid-pack nationally, and it comes attached to one of the lightest CE loads in this reference, which makes Rhode Island cheap to keep in total cost rather than just in filing fee.
Rhode Island joined the compact in 2024
Here’s the update most guides haven’t caught: Rhode Island implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 8, 2024. For years it was a single-state jurisdiction, and older resources still say so. As of 2024, if Rhode Island is your primary state of residence, your RN license can be a multistate license, letting you practice in the other compact states without applying separately in each, a real change for a small state whose nurses regularly work across the Massachusetts and Connecticut lines (Connecticut joined in 2025; Massachusetts has enacted but not yet implemented).
