Oklahoma doesn’t ask specifically for continuing education. It asks you to stay qualified to practice, and it counts five different things as proof. Twenty-four CE hours is one. Simply working as a nurse is another. For most employed RNs, the work itself already meets the bar.
Five ways to stay qualified, no mixing
Within the two years before your license expires, an active Oklahoma RN completes any one of these continuing-qualifications options:
- 520 work hours in a position that requires an RN license. For a nurse working even quarter-time, 520 hours over two years is usually already done, with no CE required.
- 24 contact hours of continuing education (a contact hour is 50 minutes).
- A current certification in a nursing specialty area.
- A Board-approved refresher course.
- 6 academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework at your licensure level or higher (the Board counts 16 contact hours per semester credit).
One firm rule: you cannot combine categories to reach the requirement. The Board’s own example is that you may not submit 260 employment hours plus 12 contact hours as a half-and-half proof, you pick one option and meet it fully. For a working nurse, the 520-hour path is usually the simplest and cheapest; for someone between jobs, the 24 CE hours are the fallback.
Renewal is biennial, on your birth month
Oklahoma renews RN licenses every two years, expiring on the last day of your birth month. That ties your deadline to something you can’t forget about yourself, though because it’s personal rather than a shared statewide date, it’s worth putting on a calendar. Renewal is done online through the Board’s system.
The fee
Renewal is $75, set in the Board’s own rules rather than adjusted administratively, so it’s stable and easy to check: OAC 485:10-1-3(a)(2)(A) puts the RN and LPN biennial renewal at $75.00. Let the license lapse and reinstatement costs the renewal fee plus $40. Coming back from inactive is the same, renewal fee plus $40.
