Registered Nurse (RN) License Renewal in Nevada

Nevada asks for a standard 30 hours of continuing education, but two of the topics inside that 30 are non-negotiable and easy to overlook: a one-time bioterrorism course, and four hours of cultural competency every single cycle. Get those two, fill the rest however fits your practice, and the requirement is met.

Thirty hours, with two required pieces inside

An active Nevada RN completes 30 contact hours of continuing education per two-year renewal. The helpful part is that Nevada’s two mandated topics count toward the 30, not on top of it:

• Bioterrorism, 4 hours, one-time. Every Nevada nurse completes a 4-hour bioterrorism (weapons of mass destruction) course once. After you’ve done it, it’s done, and those 4 hours applied to that cycle’s 30.
• Cultural competency, 4 hours every cycle. This one recurs. Nevada raised it from 2 hours to 4 hours beginning in 2024, so if you’re working from older guidance you may be planning for too few. It’s required every renewal and, like bioterrorism, counts within the 30.

That leaves 22 to 26 hours of general CE to fill with whatever is relevant to your practice. New nurses get a partial break: you’re exempt from the full 30 for your first renewal after graduation, but you still have to complete the one-time bioterrorism course and the cultural-competency hours even then.

The cycle

Nevada renews RN licenses every two years on a schedule the Board sets by regulation. Renew online through the Board’s system and attest to your hours, keeping documentation in case of audit. The two mandated topics are the ones auditors look for first, so hold those certificates specifically.

The fee

RN renewal is $100, straight off the Board’s published fee schedule. The number worth remembering next to it is the $100 late fee, because the schedule spells out why it bites: Nevada has no grace period. Renew a day past your expiration and the cost doubles. Active military members, veterans, and their spouses qualify for a 50 percent reduced application fee with documentation.

Nevada is not a compact state

Nevada has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact. A Nevada RN license is a single-state license, and to practice in another state you apply for a license by endorsement there, one state at a time, the same as nurses in California. A nurse holding a multistate license from a compact state also cannot practice in Nevada on that license alone.
